Frequently asked questions

What's in the biltong making kit?
The spice mix of coriander, black pepper and Himalayan salt, plus full instructions. You add lean beef and cider vinegar.
Do I need a biltong box?
No. Our simplified method dries biltong in a couple of hours without building or buying a drying box. No special equipment needed.
How do I make biltong?
Marinate lean beef in cider vinegar and the spice mix, then dry it to your preferred texture. The booklet has the full method.
What meat is best for biltong?
A tender, lean cut such as an inexpensive steak or a small roasting joint.
How dry should biltong be?
To your taste. At medium it bends without snapping. Dry it longer for firmer biltong.
How is biltong different from jerky?
Biltong is marinated in vinegar and spices then dried, South African style. Jerky is seasoned and oven-dried, American style. Each has its own kit.
How do I store biltong?
In an airtight container. Well-dried biltong keeps for a couple of weeks, and refrigerating extends that.
